Coffee In Smaller Doses Keeps Us Awake Longer
Tuesday, November 13, 2007

I was really sleepy that I planned to drink coffee. I am not really a coffee addict, I just drink coffee only when needed. But a thought came to my mind "how effective is coffee in keeping us awake?". So I asked my friend Google bout it.

I cam across something from here "http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/8236.php". Thought I share it to you guyz.

Enjoy reading!

----
Many small cups of coffee during the day keeps you awake better than few big cups

If you are a coffee drinker you should consider having lots of little cups of coffee during the day rather than a few big ones if you want to stay awake and alert throughout the day, say experts.

According to scientists at Harvard University, USA, a large cup of coffee in the morning gives you an initial boost that soon wears off. They say lots of small coffees are better at keeping you alert.

You can read about their research in the journal Sleep.

Caffeine interferes with the systems that govern our sleep. Our sleep duration, and when to sleep, is regulated by the circadian system and the homeostatic system. The circadian system detects night from day, it promotes sleep rhythmically, it works with the release of melatonin and some other hormones (our body clock) in a cyclical fashion. The homeostatic system tells us how much sleep we need. In other words, the circadian system tells us when to sleep and the homeostatic system tells us how long to sleep.

The researchers studied 16 men. They stayed in private suites for a period of 29 days. They had no idea what the time was during the experiment.

They were made to live on a 43-hour day schedule. They had to stay awake for 28-hour stretches - the same period some doctors and soldiers have to. The aim was to disrupt their circadian system and enhance their homeostatic system.

Some of the men were given caffeine pills while others were given dummy pills. On waking up they had to take two pills, and then one every hour.

It was a double-blind trial. This means that neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who was taking the caffeine and who was taking the dummy pills.

They found that the men on the caffeine pills had fewer microsleeps (tiny naps) than the ones on the dummy pills.

The men on the dummy pills were unintentionally asleep for 1.57% of their 'waking time'. The men on the caffeine pills were awake for 0.32% of their 'waking time'. The ones on the caffeine pills performed better in cognitive tests.

On the other hand, the men on the caffeine pills felt sleepier than the ones on the dummy pills. This showed that although caffeine can keep you awake, it does not replace sleep - it just helps you stay awake while you build up a sleep debt.

The scientists said that it seems that caffeine blocks the receptors for adenosine. Adenosine is a key chemical messenger in the homeostatic system - in our desire for sleep.

Dr James Wyatt, lead author, said "I hate to say it, but most of the population is using caffeine the wrong way by drinking a few mugs of coffee or tea in the morning. This means that caffeine levels in the brain will be falling as the day goes on. Unfortunately, the physiological process they need to counteract is not a major player until the latter half of the day. While there is no perfect substitute for sleep, our results point the way toward a much better method for using caffeine in order to maintain optimal vigilance and attention, particularly when someone has to remain awake longer than the traditional 16-hour wake episode."

Experts say that a 20-minute-nap is much more effective than any amounts of caffeine.

So Many Things Happened That Saturday!
Sunday, November 11, 2007

Geeh, so many things happened yesterday (november 10, saturday). What were they? Hmm.. wait, let me recall. =)

Oh, it started like this.
I woke up at around 7am in the morning hearing the voices of the people downstairs preparing for something. Well, i thought to myself "what are they up to now?". Then I remembered that they (my father and friends) talked about going to Meycauyan, Bulacan at Demak motors to have some parts for warranty.

Ok then, so I got up and went down. Still with bad breath I greeted them. And then I ask to come along. Then off we go!

First stop: Demak motors. As they were checking up our friend Richard's scooter, I went around the storage room and scrutinized my "soon to be" ride. The DMR 150

I really want to have this one. When it comes to rides may it be 4 wheels or 2, I really love to have it on red with a slight touch of black. You can see that on my current ride below. (btw, the photo was taken several months ago, it looks a lot different now)

Moving on...

While waiting for the repairs to be finish, Me, Alex and Eddie Boy went to Bocaue, Bulacan to try and talk to a fireworks manufacturer which Boy knew personally. They showed us some of their works like the children's favorite, the mabuhay, vitory light, roman candles up to the quite expensive pagodas and Judas belt.

After our small chitchat, I was moved into the idea of investing some money on fireworks for this year. I am not the business man type, but I think that a little something for business will give me and my family a trip to the amusement park this Christmas.

After we left the fireworks factory, we went back to Demak motors at Meycauyan to see if the repairs were done. We arrived there just on time. Before we left I talked to Rochel, The office manager, about my application on the DMR 150 ride that I talked about earlier. She happily told me that they were just waiting for the opening of the KServico branch at Meycauyan, Bulacan. I guessed that maybe, my application will be approved. =)

It was around 11:30am when we left the factory. Eddie Boy suggested a place to eat our lunch since our stomachs then were grunting and craving for food. He told us he knew a place just 5kms from where we were at that point. So we went to this place which was supposedly only 5kms but seemed like 15kms. We arrived at this place called Ninas's Restaurant. Under their business name comes the slogan "home of the fried itik" (fried duck)

Wow! This place was really amazing. The dining area was placed above a very big fish pond full of Catfishes or "Hito". I guess looking at the photos will help you better.

What I really liked most about the place was the atmosphere. It was located besides a rice field. As I told you earlier, it was like 15kms from the main road. It was somewhere deep in San Jose, Plaridel, Bulacan, based on their address. I am very not familiar at this places, glad that I tagged along. come to think of it, so many people come and dine at this remote place. The only catch is that there are no public transports going to this place. You need to have a car or something to be able to go here. I think we came across some mini buses and a couple of delivery trucks but that was it.

The catfish? Oh yeah, they were some mean looking creatures. Everything we dropped on the pond, they grabbed like a bunch of zombies. LOL

We stayed there up until 4pm. We hardly noticed the time pass by that we ordered not only lunch but merienda as well.

Just before we left Bulacan, we stopped by the famous "Popular Puto & Cutchinta House" and ordered several packs of their specialty which we then ate later that evening. And as if everything we ate wasn't enough, Uno Lim, Rolan Valeriano and our Brgy. Chairman "Chow" held a small celebration for their victory last election. We were summoned to get our share of the food. Geeh, I was still full from the food and dessert at the resto as well as the puto't cutchinta and there I was, shoving more food unto my mouth. Hmm.. I guess I really won't be able to loose weight this way. LOL

Hehe...

Later that evening we lighted up the fireworks!!!

Ciao!

After Six Months, Finally A Regular
Friday, November 09, 2007

For those of you who didn't know, I started working here on The Design People last May 10, 2007, Just more than a week after my so-called graduation.

Time flies so fast that I hardly noticed it had been 6 months. Today is just Nov 9, 2007. So tomorrow will be the official date of my regularization. But I have no work on saturdays. And I already filled up my evaluation form given to me by the team leaders.

Am I really a regular? Hmm.. I too ain't sure...(LOL). But I already signed up a Maxicare application form (a philhealth like service applicable to yourself only) yesterday. So I guess that I am a full-pledge regular then. Go ahead Neil, assume all you want..hehe.

So what about it you may ask? Hmm..my God, who wouldn't be happy of getting a regularization from work nowadays? And being my first job at the same time? Besides, I am paying a lot of bills to worry about not being a regular. Imagine just how many people/fresh graduates are dying to get a job. Some of them are even exploited by greedy companies paying them less but works them like a bunch of carabaos on a field. Hmp! Glad I found a very good one. =)

So what now? I guess, i'll just continue my very satisfactory work (yabang!) and improve my attendance, hehe... Why? because there came a time that I come to work late, very late. And I really don't want that to happen anymore. Currently, I am early at work every morning. And I want to maintain that. Well, except for certain unforseen events that is. LOL

Ok then.. I hope that everything goes a lot better than now (a much higher pay that is). Thanks Lord for all the blessings. And finally, I have a VL and SL, but I won't really be using those, wouldn't I?

Bye!! Ciao!!

Just wanna share this to you. I have recently joined DEviAnt Art , a community of artists that shares, comments, buy, sell each other's works.

I just thought that perhaps I should do my share in the community since many of my inpirations come from so many artist which I unfortunately haven't been able to remember.

Right now I am very interested in making vector art illustrations. In fact, I am planning to buy myself a wackom/wakom/wacom tablet (did I get that right?whatever) so i could start on my new hobby.

I've recently posted an artwork of mine. Well, it was based on a tutorial. But who cares! everyone starts out like me. We are not born geniuses at max. Hehe

My 23rd Birthday

Today is supposedly a very special day for me, moi and myself. Right now I am turning a year older and also a year less count on the Grim reaper's list. lol.

Nothing special for me today. Its like any other day. I am currently on work, work and work mode right. I'll have my RFONLINE hours anyway after this.

Celebrate? Nah!... I am really used not to celebrate my bday. I consider my birthday special though. But still... Any gifts will be very much appreciated. hehe... I can take cash, checks, goods or even a simple kiss will do.

Only a few people here at the office knew my birthday was today. Of course, my friends, and a couple few more. Next payday is still far off. So i guess i'll just stick to my nuts and berries diet for the poor guy. By the way, have you tried the Tondo diet? Bopiz on a stick... Yeah, very popular amongst squatters. You're sure to be very lean in one month's time. hehe.

Wish, wish, wish... I really don't know what to wish for. But I guess wishing for good health isn't bad. That goes for myself and all those special to me.

Actually, i am a bit sleepy right now. I guess i am not as excited as I should be that it is in fact my birthday today.

I can't help to think what is in a birthday anyway? We keep on celebrating it while some other people hated it coz they are getting older.

As my older friends say to me, you'll hate it once you turn 30. (lol) I'll know it when I get there, well, according to them.

Ok then.. Just wanna say THANKS to all those who remembered my birthday. Even though you gave me no gifts (i thought i wasn't expecting any? hehe) remembering meant a lot to me.

and last but not the least. Thank you Lord for all the blessings I receive.

Ciao!

Monday, November 05, 2007

I was trying to find something to let my time pass as I was just waiting for the time to come home when I bumped into this site, specifically, probeTV.

I tried viewing the episode about Teri Hatcher's comment on filipino doctors as shown on ABC's Desperate Housewives (http://www.probetv.com/view_video.php?viewkey=64bfb90db9e32851ebf9&page=&viewtype=&category=).

Then I came into this

Please watch it, this might be very useful especially that robbers/holduppers are a widespread epidemic nowadays (i think I may have exaggerated a bit..lol)

5 Food Rules to Break About Nutrition Myths
Tuesday, October 16, 2007

this article came from the source mentioned below. When I read about it, I felt that I should share this with everyone else. Science had evolved drastically over the years that many things that we used to believe are now considered a little different or worse, wrong.

Here is something about the food we eat, and the wrong myths that accompanies them.

5 Food Rules to Break

Don't let your diet — or stomach — be held captive by these nutrition myths.

By Alan Aragon, M.S., Men's Health

Source: http://health.msn.com/dietfitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100171438&GT1=10514

It goes like this: A client looking to lead a healthier life hires me, a nutritionist, to help him improve his diet. I analyze what he's been eating, factor in his food preferences, and together we create an eating plan that fits his lifestyle and goals. Soon after, he's noticeably leaner and more energetic—a happy customer.

That's when the trouble starts. After a coworker asks him for the details of his diet, my client suddenly finds himself in a heated interrogation. Doesn't your nutritionist know red meat causes cancer? And that potatoes cause diabetes? Shouldn't he tell you to eat less salt, to prevent high blood pressure?

The upshot: Myths just made my job a lot harder. That's because nutrition misinformation fools men into being confused and frustrated in their quest to eat healthily, even if they're already achieving great results. Thankfully, you're about to be enlightened by science. Here are five food fallacies you can forget about for good.

Myth #1: "High protein intake is harmful to your kidneys."

The origin: Back in 1983, researchers first discovered that eating more protein increases your "glomerular filtration rate," or GFR. Think of GFR as the amount of blood your kidneys are filtering per minute. From this finding, many scientists made the leap that a higher GFR places your kidneys under greater stress.

What science really shows: Nearly 2 decades ago, Dutch researchers found that while a protein-rich meal did boost GFR, it didn't have an adverse effect on overall kidney function. In fact, there's zero published research showing that downing hefty amounts of protein damages the kidneys.

The bottom line: As a rule of thumb, shoot to eat your target body weight in grams of protein daily. For example, if you're a chubby 200 pounds and want to be a lean 180, then have 180 grams of protein a day. Likewise if you're a skinny 150 pounds but want to be a muscular 180.

Myth #2: "Sweet potatoes are better for you than white potatoes."

The origin: Because most Americans eat the highly processed version of the white potato—for instance, french fries and potato chips—consumption of this root vegetable has been linked to obesity and an increased diabetes risk. Meanwhile, sweet potatoes, which are typically eaten whole, have been celebrated for being rich in nutrients and also having a lower glycemic index than their white brethren.

What science really shows: White potatoes and sweet potatoes have complementary nutritional differences; one isn't necessarily better than the other. For instance, sweet potatoes have more fiber and vitamin A, but white potatoes are higher in essential minerals, such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. As for the glycemic index, sweet potatoes are lower on the scale, but baked white potatoes typically aren't eaten without cheese, sour cream, or butter. These toppings all contain fat, which lowers the glycemic index of a meal.

The bottom line: The form in which you consume a potato—for instance, a whole baked potato versus a processed potato that's used to make chips—is more important than the type of spud.

Myth #3: "Red meat causes cancer."

The origin: In a 1986 study, Japanese researchers discovered cancer developing in rats that were fed "heterocyclic amines," compounds that are generated from overcooking meat under high heat. And since then, some studies of large populations have suggested a potential link between meat and cancer.

What science really shows: No study has ever found a direct cause-and-effect relationship between red-meat consumption and cancer. As for the population studies, they're far from conclusive. That's because they rely on broad surveys of people's eating habits and health afflictions, and those numbers are simply crunched to find trends, not causes.

The bottom line: Don't stop grilling. Meat lovers who are worried about the supposed risks of grilled meat don't need to avoid burgers and steak; rather, they should just trim off the burned or overcooked sections of the meat before eating.

Myth #4: "High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is more fattening than regular sugar is."

The origin: In a 1968 study, rats that were fed large amounts of fructose developed high levels of fat in their bloodstreams. Then, in 2002, University of California at Davis researchers published a well-publicized paper noting that Americans' increasing consumption of fructose, including that in HFCS, paralleled our skyrocketing rates of obesity.

What science really shows: Both HFCS and sucrose—better known as table sugar—contain similar amounts of fructose. For instance, the two most commonly used types of HFCS are HFCS-42 and HFCS-55, which are 42 and 55 percent fructose, respectively. Sucrose is almost chemically identical, containing 50 percent fructose. This is why the University of California at Davis scientists determined fructose intakes from both HFCS and sucrose. The truth is, there's no evidence to show any differences in these two types of sugar. Both will cause weight gain when consumed in excess.

The bottom line: HFCS and regular sugar are empty-calorie carbohydrates that should be consumed in limited amounts. How? By keeping soft drinks, sweetened fruit juices, and prepackaged desserts to a minimum.

Myth #5: "Salt causes high blood pressure and should be avoided."

The origin: In the 1940s, a Duke University researcher named Walter Kempner, M.D., became famous for using salt restriction to treat people with high blood pressure. Later, studies confirmed that reducing salt could help reduce hypertension.

What science really shows: Large-scale scientific reviews have determined there's no reason for people with normal blood pressure to restrict their sodium intake. Now, if you already have high blood pressure, you may be "salt sensitive." As a result, reducing the amount of salt you eat could be helpful.

However, it's been known for the past 20 years that people with high blood pressure who don't want to lower their salt intake can simply consume more potassium-containing foods. Why? Because it's really the balance of the two minerals that matters. In fact, Dutch researchers determined that a low potassium intake has the same impact on your blood pressure as high salt consumption does. And it turns out, the average guy consumes 3,100 milligrams (mg) of potassium a day—1,600 mg less than recommended.

The bottom line: Strive for a potassium-rich diet, which you can achieve by eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and legumes. For instance, spinach, broccoli, bananas, white potatoes, and most types of beans each contain more than 400 mg potassium per serving.

In Defense of Butter

Sure, butter is rich in fat—especially the saturated kind. But most of this fat is composed of palmitic and stearic acids. Research shows these saturated fatty acids either have no effect on your cholesterol or actually improve it. Not enough to convince you that butter—in moderation, of course—isn't a dietary demon? Keep reading.

One pat of butter contains just 36 calories, and the fat it provides helps you feel full longer.

Butter is one of the top sources of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural fat that's been shown to fight cancer.

Studies show the fat in butter improves your body's ability to absorb vitamins A, E, D, and K. So a pat of butter on your vegetables actually makes them healthier (and tastier).

DIGITAL MELANGE

Well, i just thought that I should post the latest craze on our office this month.

We had this sort of contest for a team name, logo and slogan. This is in conjunction with the recent changes within the company wherein we are shuffled into several groups/teams.

I belong to this group.

Digital - pertaining to the modern approach on design
Melange - a word meaning "a motley assortment of things"

Digital Melange - An elite group formed within The Design People that handles several roles. A source for fresh ideas, remarkable strategy and an awesome design kung-fu

hehe.. I just made the descriptions. We haven't really talked about that yet. Hope we will win though...

=)

Look At The Size Of That Thing!!!

That is some very big catfish!

I am not really a fan of catfishes or "HITO" as we call it in Filipino. On the other hand this big thing here costs a lot when bought on a public market. Geeh, some people crave this thing. I eat this kind of fish, but not enough to send me for another helping.

See the size of this fish? It took my mom 10 strikes on the catfish's head for the thing to be dead. It even had a crack on the skull, but it still tries to wiggle away. hehe... enough of the gore.

To finish the story, they ate the catfish while I sticked to Tuna in a can. Nothing like good ol' century tuna...
